The Health department on Friday (May 15, 2026) confirmed another case of amoebic meningoencephalitis in Kozhikode district. The infection was confirmed in a 19-year-old-boy from Feroke, who had been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode. He had been reportedly working with a private firm in Alappuzha.

With the latest case, the number of patients under treatment for the infection in the district went up to two, including a nine-year-old boy from Kottur panchayat. Hospital sources said both patients are stable and responding to treatment.

Amid concerns over fresh infections, the Health authorities have stepped up preventive and surveillance measures with focus on water quality and sanitation activities. Samples have been collected from multiple locations for laboratory analysis to identify potential sources of contamination.

All agencies involved in water supply and distribution have been instructed to ensure that adequate residual chlorine levels are maintained in drinking water systems. The directive also applies to operators of swimming pools at resorts and water-theme parks.

Advisories have also been issued to the public to avoid contact with potentially contaminated or stagnant waterbodies as a precautionary measure. According to officials, enforcement will be intensified under the Public Health Act against attempts to contaminate water sources.
