Lieutenant Colonel Ankita Srivastava (retd.) on Saturday (May 9, 2026) said every failure teaches an important lesson and brings a person closer to success.

She was delivering a talk on “Olive Green to Beauty Queen – A Journey Within,” at a programme organised by the Rostrum Speakers’ Club of Alva’s College, Moodbidri.

Sharing her personal and professional journey, Lt. Col. Srivastava spoke about the struggles, failures and achievements she encountered as a woman officer in the Indian Army and later as a participant in national beauty pageants. She said her journey from serving in the armed forces to winning recognition in the Mrs. India competition was shaped by perseverance, discipline and self-belief.

“One of the biggest challenges I faced as a woman officer was proving myself in a unit that consisted entirely of male soldiers,” she said advising students that focus, determination and action are the three essential elements for success.

Recalling her service during the Kargil War period along the India-China border, she said she sustained serious injuries while on duty but ensured that her weapon never touched the ground. It reflected the discipline and commitment instilled in soldiers.

Civilian life

Speaking about her transition to civilian life after retirement, Lt. Col. Srivastava said adapting to ordinary social life was difficult after years of strict military discipline. She admitted that interacting freely with people and behaving like a civilian initially felt unfamiliar.

Responding to students’ questions, she said, “The more you learn, the more you evolve, and every failure takes you closer to success.”

Describing the Army as more than a profession, she said, “The Army is not merely a job; it is a way of life.” She encouraged students to make the best use of their abilities, avoid complaining and develop the courage to take risks in life.

Foundation Managing Trustee M. Vivek Alva said life story of Lt. Col. Srivastava was an inspiration not only to women but also to men. He urged students not to fear failure and said setbacks often become the foundation for future success.
