Two youth, who were heading to Valparai for a picnic, died after the motorcycle they were riding crashed into the median near Pollachi in Coimbatore district on Sunday (June 14, 2026).
M. Sivashankar (21) of Kuniyamuthur and A. Habib (21) of Anna Nagar at Ukkadam died in the accident near Cheran Nagar bus stop on Coimbatore – Pollachi Road, within the limits of Mahalingapuram police station.
The police said the accident took place when Sivashankar, Habib and two others were heading to Valparai on two motorcycles. The police said the motorcycle that Sivashankar rode, with Habib on the pillion seat, crashed into the median at 9.20 a.m., when the former negotiated a curve at a higher speed. The motorcycle was thrown off to the opposite carriageway and hit a private bus.
Sivashankar, who was working as a two-wheeler mechanic at Karumbukadai, died at the spot due to severe head injuries despite wearing a helmet. Habib, an employee of a car accessories shop at Nehru Stadium, was thrown onto the private bus and died of fatal injuries.
T. Sivakumar (47) of Thammampatti in Salem, who was travelling on the footboard of the bus, fell off in the impact of the accident and suffered minor facial injuries. He was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital at Pollachi.
The Mahalingapuram police registered a case in connection with the accident.
