Three history-sheeters were arrested and one habitual offender was detained under the Goondas Act during a 48-hour special drive conducted by the police in Mayiladuthurai district, the police said on Saturday.
The special operation, carried out on May 20 and 21, was aimed at maintaining law and order, preventing crimes, and regulating traffic movement in the district. As part of the drive, the police intensified an action against history-sheeters, illegal liquor sales, banned tobacco products, and drunken driving.
According to the police, 53 history-sheeters were checked and their activities monitored. Of them, three persons allegedly involved in disturbing public peace were arrested. One habitual offender was detained under the Goondas Act.
The police registered cases against 30 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol in an effort to curb road accidents.
Seven persons involved in the illegal sale of liquor and 13 persons found consuming alcohol in public places were arrested, the police said.
In another operation, six persons were arrested for selling banned gutkha products. Police seized around 18.53 kg of gutkha and other tobacco products from them.
Mayiladuthurai Superintendent of Police G. Stalin said the activities of anti-social elements were being closely monitored and warned that stringent action would be taken against those committing crimes such as harassment of women and children and narcotics peddling.
