General Education Minister N. Samsudheen has called for a review of Central guidelines that require teachers to be deployed for non-academic government assignments such as census operations and electoral work.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday (June 16, 2026), he expressed concern over the frequent deployment of teachers for such purposes. The excessive reliance on teachers in this regard causes academic disruption and affects classroom learning, he said.

Mr. Samsudheen also referred to concerns regarding transfers of teachers being affected by census-related deployment.

Referring to Central guidelines that prohibit the transfers of employees who are assigned census duties, Mr. Samsudheen said the State government has reservations about the practical implications of the rule, particularly for teachers who have been waiting years for transfer opportunities.

“Teachers who have waited for years for a transfer should not lose their opportunity because of a short-term census assignment. They should be permitted to perform their census duties wherever they are posted during the particular period,” he said.

According to him, preventing transfers for an entire year for census work that lasts 10 to 15 days is unfair to employees.
