Even as Kottayam appears set to emerge as a major gainer in the upcoming United Democratic Front (UDF) Cabinet formation, Pathanamthitta risks being sidelined, with the district unlikely to secure a ministerial berth in the initial round of allocation.
Inside UDF circles, the growing assessment is that despite sending four legislators to the Assembly, Pathanamthitta may still struggle to find a place in the Cabinet equation. All four UDF MLAs from the district are first-time legislators, a factor that is believed to have significantly weakened the district’s bargaining power.
The UDF lineup in the district comprises Pazhakulam Madhu from Ranni, Abin Varkey Kodiyattu from Aranmula, C.V. Shanthakumar from Adoor, and Varghese Mamman from Thiruvalla. While the first three belong to the Congress, Mr. Mamman represents the Kerala Congress.
“Though all four leaders may have held important organisational positions within their parties, Cabinet formation is ultimately about political weight and social equations. Pathanamthitta is struggling on both fronts this time,” observed a senior Congress leader.
Coalition dynamics
The challenge becomes sharper when coalition dynamics are factored in. Within the Kerala Congress, the lone assured ministerial berth is almost certain to go to parliamentary party leader Mons Joseph. Even if the party secures a second berth, the race is widely believed to be between Apu John Joseph and Thomas Unniyadan.
Among the Congress legislators, Pazhakulam Madhu is considered the strongest contender on paper, aided by his organisational seniority and proximity to AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal. However, even that may not be enough. Community representation is expected to emerge as a decisive factor, potentially undercutting his prospects at the final stage. Youth Congress leader Abin Varkey too is seen as a rising face, but insiders say his chances could be overshadowed by competing claims from more influential camps within the party.
Past representation
Historically too, Cabinet representation for Pathanamthitta has been sporadic rather than assured. In the 2011–16 UDF Ministry, Adoor Prakash represented the district in the Cabinet. Before that, during the 2001–06 UDF regime, it was only in the final phase of the Ministry, after Oommen Chandy took over as Chief Minister, that leaders such as Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and Adoor Prakash found space in the Cabinet.
The Left era offered the district relatively better visibility. Former Thiruvalla legislator Mathew T. Thomas served as Minister in both the 2006 Cabinet led by V.S. Achuthanandan and the 2016 Ministry headed by Pinarayi Vijayan, though he could not complete his tenure on either occasion. In the outgoing LDF government, former Aranmula legislator Veena George remained one of the district’s most visible ministerial faces as Health Minister.
