Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios have officially announced an animated adaptation of Absolute Batman, bringing one of DC’s biggest comic book successes in recent years to the screen.

The project was unveiled during a joint presentation by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where the studios also revealed a new anime centered on the Joker and an original animated series starring Superman’s canine companion, Krypto.
Based on the hit comic by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, Absolute Batman reimagines Bruce Wayne in an entirely new continuity. Unlike the traditional origin story, this version sees Bruce lose only one parent and grow up in Gotham’s working-class neighborhoods instead of the city’s wealthiest circles. The result is a physically imposing, more aggressive Dark Knight whose unconventional methods have helped redefine the iconic hero for a new generation of readers.
Snyder and Dragotta will remain closely involved in the adaptation, with Snyder serving as executive producer and showrunner, while Dragotta joins as a producer.
Since its launch in late 2024, Absolute Batman has become one of DC’s biggest publishing successes, selling more than six million copies and helping the publisher overtake Marvel in comic market share for the first time in decades.
Warner Bros. Animation also announced Joker: Laugh Riot, DC’s first anime series. The show offers a radical twist on the Clown Prince of Crime by placing him in the role of an unlikely detective after Batman is murdered. As Joker hunts for the killer responsible for his greatest rival’s death, he begins questioning his own identity in a Gotham City without the Dark Knight.
The anime is being executive produced by longtime DC animation veteran Jim Krieg and directed by Yasuhiro Aoki, with Japan’s SOLA Entertainment collaborating on the project.

Completing the slate is an untitled animated series focused on Krypto. Executive produced by animation veteran C.H. Greenblatt, the comedy follows Superman’s super-powered dog as he joins a group of aspiring young criminals whose misadventures are gradually transformed by Krypto’s infectious optimism.
The announcements further expand DC Studios’ growing animation lineup, which also includes the upcoming Batman: Knightfall trilogy and a second season of Batman: Caped Crusader.
