U.S. Treasury sanctions Iraqi militias backed by Iran
The U.S. imposed sanctions on seven senior commanders of Iraqi militias that are supported by Iran, including groups like Kataib Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq, for allegedly planning and carrying out attacks on U.S. personnel and coalition forces in the region.
Officials have said the move is part of a broader effort to counter Iran’s influence in Iraq and deter further violence against U.S. interests.
The action also signifies a U.S. strategy of using economic pressure, not just military force, to target Iran’s network of allies, while warning global banks and firms to stop doing business with anyone tied to these groups.

Lebanese trickle home as ceasefire with Israel mostly holds
People uprooted by the war in Lebanon began returning home on Friday (April 17), checking whether their houses were still standing, though some did not plan to stay for fear a 10-day ceasefire in the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel could prove fragile.
Hills of rubble marked the spot where buildings once stood in the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, an area pummelled by Israel during more than six weeks of conflict that spiralled out of the war between the United States and Iran.
In Qasmiyeh in south Lebanon, cars were driving across a makeshift crossing over the Litani River, hastily erected after the ceasefire came into effect at midnight local time (2100 GMT). Israel destroyed all the bridges over the Litani during the war, blowing up the one at Qasmiyeh on Thursday.
“I inspected my home and praise God the building is still standing,” said Ali Hamza, who had just visited his house in the southern suburbs known as Dahiyeh.
But he said “people are scared to come and live, and it is impossible to live in these circumstances, and with these smells. A full return is difficult now, despite the hardship of displacement”.

Import-dependent South Korea has taken steps to mitigate the risks to its energy supplies since U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran in late February prompted Tehran to shut off access to the strait, now under a U.S. blockade.
Seoul has sought new sources of oil and said this month that it would send five Korean-flagged ships to the Saudi Arabian Red Sea port of Yanbu to establish alternative routes.
The Ministry announced on Friday (April 17) the “first case of crude oil being transported into the country via the Red Sea, a detour, since the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz”.
President Lee Jae Myung called it “a valuable achievement made by the relevant ministries moving as one team”.

South African rand steady as markets watch for U.S.-Iran peace deal
The South African rand held steady in early trade on Friday (April 17) as investors waited to see whether there will be a U.S.-Iran peace deal that could ease concerns over rising inflation and high interest rates.
Investors are watching for progress in U.S.-Iran talks, as any breakthrough or extension of the fragile ceasefire could ease oil and inflation fears and support further gains in gold.
Gold, a major South African export, also held steady on Friday, staying on track for a fourth straight weekly gain.
South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond was slightly weaker in early deals, as the yield rose 4 basis points to 8.51%.

Oil falls on prospects for talks to end Iran war
Oil prices fell in early trade on Friday (April 17) on optimism the West Asian war could be nearing an end after a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect and President Donald Trump said the U.S. and Iran may meet for talks on the weekend.
Brent crude futures declined by 61 cents, or 0.61%, to $98.78 a barrel at 0707 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 89 cents, or 0.94%, to $93.8 a barrel, trimming gains from the previous session.
Addressing a key sticking point in talks to end the Iran war, which has closed the Strait of Hormuz for seven weeks and choked off roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, Mr. Trump said Tehran had offered not to possess nuclear weapons for more than 20 years.
“We’re going to see what happens. But I think we’re very close to making a deal with Iran,” Mr. Trump told reporters outside the White House on Thursday (April 16).

European countries have capacity to clear mines in Hormuz, French Defence Minister says
European countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands and France have mine clearance capacity which could help secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin told French TV station TF1 on Friday.
“There are capabilities to provide fully supported escort services – that is to say, in no way offensive, of course – for ships to ensure safe passage through the strait; that is what will be debated today in Paris,” she added.
France and Britain are set to chair on Friday a meeting of around 40 countries aimed at signalling to the United States that some of its closest allies are ready to play a role in restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.-- Reuters

NATO will not collapse and U.S. will defend its allies, Estonian minister says
NATO member Estonia has no doubt that the United States would help defend it if Russia attacks, its defence minister told Reuters, while warning that Europe is not ready to stand up to Moscow on its own.
Estonian intelligence warned in February its neighbour Russia is already stockpiling ammunition for future wars after the conflict in Ukraine ends. Russia has described allegations by European leaders that it could attack NATO as nonsense.
U.S. President Donald Trump this month threatened to pull the U.S. out of the alliance over European members’ refusal to send ships to unblock the Strait of Hormuz near Iran. The alliance was already rattled by his plans to take over Greenland from Denmark, a NATO ally.-- Reuters

IMF warns EU not to offset the energy price spike too much
European governments should not excessively shield businesses and consumers from more expensive energy because that distorts the price signal to cut consumption and could be fiscally very expensive, the International Monetary Fund said.
Europe’s heavy reliance on oil and gas imports has left it exposed to spiralling prices since the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil and gas shipping route, was closed as a result of the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran and Tehran attacking energy infrastructure in West Asia. The European Commission wants to let countries spend more public money to help businesses with fuel and fertiliser bills as governments race to offset the economic shock from soaring prices.
“Prices help reduce demand and bring supply and demand back into balance. Many measures under discussion weaken that signal,” the head of the IMF’s European Department, Alfred Kammer, told Reuters.

Loss of energy output in West Asia will take about two years to recover, IEA says
It will take about two years to recover the energy output lost in West Asia from the conflict there, Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, was quoted as saying on Friday (April 17) in an interview with the Neue Zuercher Zeitung newspaper.
“That will vary from country to country. In Iraq, for example, it will take much longer than in Saudi Arabia. However, we estimate it will take approximately two years overall to reach pre-war levels again,” Mr. Birol told the Swiss newspaper.

Pakistani-flagged tanker exits Gulf via Hormuz with UAE crude, data shows
Pakistani-flagged tanker Shalamar has exited the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz carrying crude loaded from the United Arab Emirates, shipping data from Kpler and LSEG showed.
The Aframax tanker exited the waterway on Thursday laden with about 440,000 barrels of Abu Dhabi’s Das Blend crude loaded earlier this week, Kpler data showed. The vessel is heading to the port of Karachi to discharge its cargo on April 19, according to the data.
The Shalamar was one of two Pakistani tankers that entered the strait on Sunday to load crude and oil products. Pakistan’s petroleum minister said on Wednesday that the Shalamar loaded crude from the UAE at an ADNOC terminal.

Strongly urge early restoration of freedom of navigation through Strait of Hormuz: India
India termed the targeting of commercial shipping during the West Asia conflict as deplorable, strongly urging that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz be restored at the earliest.
“An aspect of particular concern for India for its energy and economic security relates to commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni said in the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
“India has deplored the fact that commercial shipping was made a target of military attacks in this conflict,” Mr. Parvathaneni said.

Trump characterizes Iran war as a 'little diversion'
President Donald Trump said the U.S. war with Iran was a “little diversion” during his second term in power, as recent polling shows the conflict’s unpopularity with the American public.
At an event in Las Vegas, Nevada touting his “no tax on tips” measure from the major tax reform bill passed last year, the 79-year-old president boasted about his economic record since returning to office in 2025.
“We had the best economy in the history of our country in my first term. And we’re blowing it out now...And despite our little diversion to the lovely country of Iran, lovely place,” Trump told the crowd of supporters.
“But we had to do that, because otherwise, bad things could happen, the really bad thing,” he continued, referencing Iran’s apparent nuclear potential.
