Story so far: Assam continued to promote pro-incumbency as it handed BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sarma a second term as Chief Minister on May 4, 2026. The BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) won 102 of the 126-seat Assembly polls, while the Congress-led six-party alliance won only 21 seats (Congress –19, Raijor Dal – 2).
With BJP making “removal of illegal immigrants” and continuing infrastructure push in the northeast at its poll plank, the Congress-led Opposition coalition banked on the ‘three Gogoi’ formula to dent its chances. However, the gamble failed as Congress State chief Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP’s Hitendranath Goswami by 23,182 votes, and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi lost Khowang to BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi by 9,984 votes.
