Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday (May 20, 2026) said Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s “traitor” remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected his “anarchic mindset”.

“You have insulted not merely Narendra Modi ji, but the 140 crore citizens of this country. It seems you have not learnt any lessons from the past, as every time you have insulted Narendra Modi ji, people have responded by adorning him with the garland of victory. You will definitely have to pay a heavy price for such an unfortunate remark,” said Mr. Nabin in a video message.

Mr. Nabin’s response came after Mr. Gandhi, at an event in his Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, called Mr. Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah “traitors”, accusing them of attacking the Constitution.

Stating that such a comment served only to vitiate the country’s political atmosphere, the BJP chief said: “His [Mr. Gandhi’s] continuous electoral defeats and the resulting frustration are now becoming evident in his temperament and conduct, and that desperation and despondency are reflected in his statements.”

He said that under Mr. Modi’s leadership, the country’s borders were secure and the government had adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards corruption and terrorism, unlike the Congress-led rule, which he alleged was plagued by corruption.

“Your ancestors mortgaged this country’s land and never did anything to boost the morale of our soldiers,” Mr. Nabin said, adding that under Mr. Modi, soldiers were serving the country with self-respect and dignity. “Is eradicating naxalism, safeguarding the country’s territory, and enhancing the honour of the Tricolour across the country an act of treachery?” he asked.
