Doctors at the Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Hyderabad have successfully performed a rare living donor liver transplant on a one-year-ten-month-old baby diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) Type III, a rare inherited metabolic disorder that can lead to recurrent hypoglycaemia, liver enlargement and progressive organ damage if left untreated.
The transplant was performed free of cost under the Aarogyasri Health scheme, a procedure that would have otherwise cost between ₹50 lakh and ₹60 lakh at a private hospital. Carried out on Tuesday (April 28, 2026), the surgery involved transplanting approximately 240 grams of liver tissue donated by the child’s father and lasted around 14 hours.
