The Special Court for the trial of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Coimbatore on Thursday sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting his relative’s daughter aged two in 2022.
Special court judge T. Bagavathiammal awarded the punishment to a 38-year-old man hailing from a place near Kavundampalayam.
The police stated that the man, a daily wage labourer, used to visit the house of the survivor girl and take her to his residence. On June 28, 2022, he took the girl to his house and sexually assaulted her. The girl’s mother lodged a complaint at the All Women Police Station, Thudiyalur, the next day, following which the man was arrested.
The trial court delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday and slapped a fine of ₹10,000 on him in addition to the jail term. The court also ordered the State to pay a compensation of ₹5 lakh to the survivor.
