Teachers’ organisations that had been seeking a review of a Supreme Court 2025 judgment requiring in-service teachers to clear Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) in two years are seeking Union government intervention for getting legislative relief for teachers.

The court recently gave an extension of one more year to pass TET.

Kerala School Teachers’ Association (KSTA) general secretary T.K.A. Shafi said a recourse left to them was to file a curative petition since the Supreme Court had refused to entertain any more pleas from in-service teachers for further extension of time to gain the TET qualification.

Mr. Shafi said the other option was to seek Union government intervention to protect in-service teachers by bringing a legislation in Parliament. The KSTA would send representations to MPs to press their case, Mr. Shafi said.

National Teachers UnionState general secretary T. Anoop Kumar, in a statement, said attempts would be made to bring in an amendment in Parliament, including in connection with the retrospective aspect in the court judgment.

The Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh has urged the Union government to take immediate steps to provide relief to the affected teachers by bringing in an ordinance or legislative amendment to protect the interests of teachers while ensuring continuity in the education sector. The affected teachers had been appointed following due process conducted by competent authorities under prevailing government rules and notifications, it said.

In Kerala, nearly 65,000 teachers did not have K-TET qualifications around the time of the Supreme Court judgment in September 2025. Since then, two K-TET exams have been held and nearly half of the teachers have obtained the qualification. Another exam for in-service teachers will be held in June. Nearly 55,000 teachers have applied for it. However, with results of a K-TET exam declared just a few days ago, this number is expected to go down significantly.
