A gang intercepted a couple riding a two-wheeler near Singampunari here on Monday, assaulted them with a machete and a wooden log, and fled after robbing them of their jewellery.
Police said Dhanabalan, 55, a resident of Chelliyampatti near Singampunari in Sivaganga district, and his wife Shanmugavalli were traveling on a two-wheeler from their daughter’s house in Singampunari to Chelliyampatti on Monday night.
When they were near Puthuvayal, a car going ahead of them suddenly stopped. Four people got out of the car and attacked Dhanabalan with a machete and a log and robbed him of ₹8,000. Subsequently, they also attacked Shanmugavalli and fled after snatching the three-sovereign gold chain she was wearing.
Passersby rescued the injured couple and admitted them to Singampunari Government Hospital. The Singampunari police are investigating the incident.
In a separate incident, 62-year-old Ariyanachi from N. Puthukkulam near Ilayangudi was robbed of her two-sovereign gold chain while traveling with her grandchildren on a government bus.
Sivaganga Taluk police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
