Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Friday (May 29, 2026) said he would take necessary steps to protect the interests of Puducherry in getting its due share of the Cauvery water for the Karaikal region of the Union Territory (U.T.).

Interacting with reporters after attending a ceremony in the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said his government would take all the necessary measures to protect the interests of farmers in Karaikal.

He was responding to a query on the Karnataka government’s decision to construct a reservoir across Mekedatu and the resultant apprehensions of the riparian States in getting their share of the Cauvery water.

To another query on a CBSE circular directing States and Union Territories to introduce the three-language formula, he said, “I have written to the Union Education Minister expressing apprehensions of the U.T. in implementing the CBSE’s direction. If needed, I will take up the issue again.”

Asked about the delay in the formation of a full Ministry and the allocation of portfolios to the two Ministers who have already been sworn in, the Chief Minister said: “We will inform you [the media] when a decision is taken on those aspects.”

He did not respond to a question on the chances of him seeking an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the context of newly appointed Chief Ministers of neighbouring States calling on Mr. Modi.

The Chief Minister also informed that summer holidays have been extended and the schools would reopen only on June 4.
