District Collector Sumit Kumar on Wednesday appealed to the representatives of the mango pulp processing units and farmers’ associations for coordinated efforts to ensure better returns for “Totapuri” mango growers during the current mango season.

Speaking to the media here, the Collector said Chittoor district has 31 mango pulp industries that procure Totapuri mangoes from farmers and process them into pulp for domestic and industrial markets. He said payments to growers are linked to pulp sales, adding that this year’s mango crop is expected to be higher than last year’s output.

Highlighting the need for quality-based procurement, Mr. Sumit Kumar urged farmers to harvest fruits only after they reach proper maturity, as well-ripened mangoes are likely to fetch better prices. He said the district has around 53,000 hectares under Totapuri cultivation and is expecting substantial arrivals during the season.

The Collector said a large share of the produce is supplied to markets in North India, while another significant portion moves to the neighbouring Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu. He added that he would discuss the issue with the Krishnagiri district administration to explore ways of securing improved prices for growers.

Mr. Sumit Kumar appealed to the farmers to harvest quality fruits in three or four phases instead of a single picking, saying staggered supply would help processors maintain quality standards and offer more competitive rates.
