In a novel initiative, the State government has decided to supply jowar and maize procured from farmers through fair price shops (FSP) run by the Civil Supplies Department at rates lower than the prevailing market prices.

The decision, taken at a recent Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting, is aimed at safeguarding farmers’ interests while improving access to affordable and nutritious food for economically weaker sections. The government will procure maize and jowar directly from farmers to ensure they receive remunerative prices and do not incur losses.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the initiative seeks to ensure that foodgrains serve as a source of nutrition for the poor rather than remaining a mere market commodity.

In a shift from the existing practice of auctioning procured grains in the open market — often enabling middlemen to benefit — the government plans to process, pack and supply these grains directly to consumers at subsidised prices.

The move is also expected to benefit students in welfare institutions. Officials have been directed to supply jowar and maize to SC, ST, BC and Minority Gurukul schools and hostels to improve dietary standards. In addition, the government is considering extending the supply of these grains at concessional rates to poultry farmers to support the sector, which is currently facing challenges.
