The Telangana High Court on Wednesday directed a petitioner, who sought a direction to preserve the historic World War-II memorial contending that authorities would be demolishing it while constructing an elevated corridor from Paradise junction to Shamirpet, to represent the matter to the State government.

A bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin, hearing a Public Interest Litigation (which was at scrutiny stage) filed by Ramakrishna, former member of Secunderabad Cantonment Board, declined to interfere in the matter. The petitioner wanted the HC to instruct the authorities to ensure the war memorial coming in the way of proposed elevated corridor was not demolished.

He maintained that the memorial, a heritage structure, was built remembering the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in 1950s. It is located on General Chaudhary road beside Parade Ground in Secunderabad. While the government counsel informed the court that the memorial was unlikely to be demolished as the elevated corridor project works were still at initial stages. The bench led by the CJ instructed the petitioner to represent the matter to the government and adjourned hearing of the PIL plea after summer vacation.
