Mines and Geology Minister Kollu Ravindra on Thursday said that all steps are in place to ensure that the people are not put to any inconvenience in the supply of sand.

Mr Ravindra, who also holds the Excise portfolio, said that officials have been instructed to eradicate the manufacture of illicit and country-made liquor.

The Minister conducted a review meeting of the Mines and Excise department officials on Thursday at the Collectorate. Speaking to media after the meeting, he said that the government is implementing ‘Free Sand Policy’ to ensure easy access to sand.

“Though the government is incurring a annual revenue loss of ₹300 crores, measures are in place to ensure there is no difficulty in accessing sand,” he said. He directed officials to ensure no shortage of sand anywhere within the district. He also asked officials to take robust measures for the development of the mining sector in Kurnool and Nandyal districts.

District Collector Dr. A. Siri said that there are five open reaches and five desiltation points currently operational within the district for sand extraction. Additionally, approximately three tonnes of sand is stockpiled at these open reaches, ensuring there is no shortage.

Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil added that measures are being taken to prevent the illegal transportation of sand, and vehicles found transporting sand illegally are being seized.

The Minister directed the excise department to pay special attention to eradicate the manufacturing of country-made liquor. He said: “The current excise policy will expire in September, and fresh directives regarding a new policy would be issued shortly.” He directed officials to invoke the Preventive Detention (PD) Act against individuals repeatedly engage in the manufacturing of country-made liquor.

The Collector informed that steps are being taken to curb the illegal transportation of liquor and distilling of illicit liquor in the district. She added that alternative livelihood opportunities have already been provided to 36 individuals who have ceased the production of illicit liquor. She added that steps would be taken within a period of one month to provide employment to the remaining 50 individuals whose cases are currently pending.

Mr. Vikrant Patil added that the excise and police departments along with enforcement officials are working in coordination when it comes to inter-border movement of distilled liquor and ganja.
