Drinking water supply to Mahalakshmi Nagar in the city has been affected over the past few days due to the damage to a main pipeline at Keezha Kalkandarkottai.
Residents of Mahalakshmi Nagar 2nd Street in Ward 42 of the Tiruchi Corporation have been facing hardship for over three days due to damage to the main drinking water pipeline near the Sai Baba Temple.
The concrete pipeline that carries Cauvery water to the locality developed a breach on Wednesday. According to officials, the damage occurred during road work undertaken by the Corporation.
Residents said large quantities of water have been continuously leaking from the damaged pipeline, resulting in waterlogging on nearby roads and causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. The damage has also disrupted the regular supply of drinking water to several households in the locality.
“Water has been flowing onto the road day and night for the past three days. At the same time, many houses are not receiving drinking water supply. People are forced to depend on stored water and private cans for their daily needs,” said a resident.
Residents also pointed out that stagnant water on the roads had made it difficult for two-wheeler riders and elderly persons to move around safely in the locality. They urged the Corporation authorities to complete the repair work at the earliest to prevent further wastage of drinking water.
K.C. Neelamegam of Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam, a voluntary organisation, said the issue had affected residents in the area and sought swift intervention from officials.
When contacted, Ward councillor O. Neelamegam said the Corporation workers were deployed, and repair works were under way and assured that regular drinking water supply would be restored from Sunday.
