A 45-year-old man was on Friday arrested for transporting packets of banned gutka in an autorickshaw in Choolaimedu.
The police seized 445.5 kg of gutka packets, the autorickshaw, and a light commercial goods vehicle in connection with the case.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted vehicle checks near the Arumbakkam Metro Rail station on Friday morning. During the inspection, the police intercepted an autorickshaw and found sacks containing gutka packets concealed inside the vehicle.
They registered a case and arrested Vetrivel, a resident of MGR Nagar in Kodungaiyur.
An inquiry revealed that Vetrivel had loaded the autorickshaw with gutka packets from a light commercial vehicle parked near a travel agency’s office close to the Arumbakkam Metro station.
Subsequently, the police seized additional sacks containing gutka packets from the parked vehicle.
Vetrivel already has a gutka-related case registered against him at the Triplicane police station.
