In a special operation, the Hulimavu police arrested one of the three accused involved in the assault on a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus driver and seized a two-wheeler allegedly used in the crime.
The accused, Abdul Shoib, 26, a bike mechanic, went on the run soon after the video went viral on social media. The police, with the help of technical evidence, tracked him down.
According to the police, the incident occurred on May 12, around 2.30 p.m. when a BMTC bus travelling from Banashankari to Bannerghatta was intercepted near Gottigere on Bannerghatta Main Road by three men riding a two-wheeler over an alleged overtaking dispute.
The accused allegedly blocked the bus, abused the driver in filthy language on a public road, brandished deadly weapons and assaulted him. A video of the incident later went viral on social media, following which the Hulimavu Police Station registered a suo motu case.
During the investigation, the police formed three special teams to trace the accused. On May 17, one of the accused was apprehended near Tippu Circle in Bilvaradahalli. The police also seized a spanner and the two-wheeler allegedly used in the assault.
During the interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to assaulting the BMTC driver along with his two associates using deadly weapons.
The accused was produced before the court on May 18 and was remanded in judicial custody. The police said the remaining two accused are absconding and efforts are under way to trace and arrest them.
