Instagram recently introduced its one-time ‘Instants’ photo-sharing feature that allows people to send images right to their friends or close friends’ inboxes.

The feature appears to be a way to encourage users to send short-term, spontaneous shots to their close contacts via messages, rather than posting a curated story that is viewable for 24 hours. Instants are sent almost as soon as the user taps the shutter, meaning that there is little time to review the image or apply any fixes.

Predictably, some users have claimed that due to the design of the feature, they have accidentally sent out selfies via their front cameras without meaning to. Others do not wish to see the Instants thumbnails from contacts taking up space in their Instagram inboxes.

Meta said that it was experimenting with an Instants standalone app in select countries, for quicker access to the camera.

While unseen Instants can be reversed via an ‘Undo’ option, here is a guide to disabling Instants completely, should you wish to do so.
