HYDERABAD

Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTAU) has announced “Seed Week 2026” (Vithana Varothsavaalu-2026) celebrations with the theme of “Quality Seed for Prosperous Farming” from May 23 to 30 to provide access to high-quality foundation seed to farmers for the coming Kharif season.

According to Vice-Chancellor Aldas Janaiah, the crop-wise seed availability for kharif 2026 would be 12,310.65 quintals of quality foundation seed, which would help coverage of an estimated 1,49,849 acres by about 1.5 lakh farmers.

The crop-wise seed to be made available is paddy 10,355.65 quintals (for 1,03,556 acres), redgram 666 quintals (22,200 acres), greengram 212 quintals (4,240 acres), blackgram 240 quintals (4,800 acres), maize 350 quintals (4,125 acres), soybean 107 quintals (428 acres), sorghum 120 quintals (4,000 acres), finger millet 30 quintals (2,500 acres), castor 30 quintals (2,000 acres) and sesame 20 quintals (2,000 acres).

The variety-wise seed provided would be — Telangana Sona (RNR 15048), Kunaram Vari-2 (KNM 1638), Siddi (WGL 44) and others of paddy, Telangana Kandi 3 (TDRG 59) and Warangal Kandi 1 (WRGE 97) in case of redgram. Other crops like maize, greengram, blackgram, and soybean would be offered in popular and region-specific varieties.

To facilitate easy access to farmers, PJTAU has set up multiple sale counters across districts, and each counter is managed by agricultural research stations or Krishi Vigyan Kendras, with contact persons listed for farmer assistance.

By making a diverse range of seeds available, the university aims to support farmers in achieving better productivity and profitability during the Kharif 2026 season. Farmers are encouraged to reach out to the respective sale counters or visit the university website for more information and book seed in advance from May 18.
