Urban Local Bodies on high alert
Principal Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department, S. Suresh Kumar, has directed municipal commissioners, particularly in Central and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh districts, to activate emergency preparedness measures between May 20 and May 26 to prevent heat-related illnesses and fatalities.

Urban Local Bodies (ULB) have been asked to intensify public awareness campaigns through ward secretariats, social media, local cable networks, municipal vehicles and public announcement systems. Heat wave advisories and ward-wise alerts are to be disseminated among residents.
The government has also directed ULBs to establish drinking water facilities at bus stands, hospitals, schools, markets, labour congregation points and Anna Canteens. Temporary water kiosks, cooling shelters and tanker supply arrangements are to be prioritised, especially in vulnerable and water-scarce areas.

The directive has placed special emphasis on protecting sanitation workers, outdoor labourers, street vendors, elderly citizens and homeless persons through ward-level monitoring and coordinated health support.
Mr. Suresh Kumar has directed municipal authorities to personally oversee preparedness measures daily, and said there should be “no slackness in field-level implementation” during the forecast period.
