Uttar Pradesh Government on Saturday (April 25, 2026) said its water quality and access mechanism nullifies cases of water —borne diseases across Uttar Pradesh amid rural water access witnessing major improvements as approximately 90% of rural households—covering nearly 2.44 crore families—now receive safe and treated drinking water through functional household tap connections under the flagship “Har Ghar Nal Se Jal” initiative. The government described it as a remarkable transformation in rural drinking water access under the ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), converting what was once a pressing public health challenge into a significant developmental milestone.

“Before the launch of the Jal Jeevan mission in 2019, access to safe and potable drinking water in rural areas of the State remained severely constrained. A majority of households relied on traditional sources such as hand pumps, wells, and surface water bodies—including ponds and rivers—many of which were contaminated with hazardous chemical elements like arsenic, fluoride, iron, and nitrate. Additionally, bacteriological contamination, particularly Escherichia coli (E. coli), posed serious health risks. However, the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission has dramatically altered this scenario. As per recent data, approximately 90% of rural households—covering nearly 2.44 crore families—now receive safe and treated drinking water through functional household tap connections under the flagship “Har Ghar Nal Se Jal” initiative, drastically deceasing cases of water-borne diseases,” told Anurag Srivastava, Additional Chief Secretary of the Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department, to The Hindu.
