The slow pace of the pre-monsoon cleaning drive in Kozhikode city came under criticism at the Corporation Council meeting on Friday (May 29, 2026), with councillors expressing concern that incomplete works could leave several areas vulnerable to waterlogging during the monsoon.

Councillors pointed out that cleaning activities remained unfinished in many parts of the city due to a shortage of sanitation workers, inadequate equipment, and other operational constraints.

Members noted that essential machinery, including excavators, was not available in sufficient numbers. They also said a shortage of funds was adversely affecting the cleaning drive and raised concerns over the inadequate supply of gumboots for sanitation workers.

Mayor O. Sadasivan stressed the need to address the issue on a priority basis. He directed officials to submit detailed reports on the cleaning works carried out in each area and instructed them to expedite operations by mobilising all available resources, including sanitation workers, wherever necessary.

The council observed that the challenge could be effectively addressed only through coordinated and efficient cleaning efforts at both the ward and circle levels. The Mayor said the Corporation would explore avenues for securing additional financial assistance to address the funding shortfall.

During the meeting, BJP councillor Jisha Sabareesh highlighted disruptions in the functioning of ‘Smrithipatham’ crematorium due to a shortage of gas.

Corporation secretary N.K. Hareesh informed the meeting that inspections of ageing Corporation buildings, being carried out under the aegis of NIT-Calicut, had been completed in four buildings. Mr. Hareesh said inspections of the remaining structures would commence on Monday (May 30, 2026) and were expected to be completed within a week.
