Seeking immediate replacement of damaged drinking water distribution pipes, DMK councillor B. Seetha of ward 39 submitted petition to Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju on Tuesday during the weekly grievances day meeting.

The agitated councillor said thousands of litres of precious drinking water is going waste at several places due to badly damaged distribution pipes laid in ward 39. Even though several petitions had been submitted with the engineering section of Palayamkottai Zone, the officials refuse to take any step to remove the damaged pipes at St. Thomas Road, near District Revenue Officer’s camp office, TVS Nagar third and fourth streets, Maharaja Nagar third main road and Maharaja Nagar 27th cross street and lay quality pipes.

“If the officials still refuse to address this problem, I’ll mobilise the public and stage dharna in these places,” Ms. Seetha warned.

She also complained that the contract firm executing the underground drainage work in her ward had not filled-up the underground drainage trenches with concrete.

A group of residents from Kodeeswaran Nagar in ward 21 also submitted a petition urging the Corporation to re-lay the roads damaged in the underground drainage work.

In her petition, DMK councillor of ward 51 D. Sahaya Juliet Mary said the overhead tank at Thamizh Nagar in the ward has to get water from the ground-level sump in adjacent Teachers’ Colony. Since there is no motor for pumping water from the ground-level sump to the Thamizh Nagar overhead tank, supply of drinking water to the four beneficiary areas falling under this tank remains hit.

“Even though a petition seeking the installation of a motor for pumping water to the Thamizh Nagar overhead tank was submitted on February 3 last, no step has been taken so far to fulfill this genuine demand,” Ms. Juliet said.

A group of women from Sardarpuram North Street in Old Pettai submitted a petition complaining about the sewage-mixed drinking water being supplied to the families living on this street for the past several weeks. “Since the residents who drank this water withtout boiling it had contracted jaundice and typhoid, the Corporation should replace the damaged drinking water pipes to supply protected drinking water to the residents,” said M. Bhanumathi, one of the petitioners.

A group of residents from Mallika Colony under ward 55 submitted a petition seeking drainage channels for draining the rainwater and proper roads to their area.

The CPI (ML) submitted a petition urging the Corporation to either re-lay or at least repair the badly damaged busy roads connecting Tirunelveli Town Arch and Kodeeswaran Nagar, Rottikkadai Stop and Old Pettai, Vazhukkodai and Old Pettai.

The Left party also appealed to the officials to take steps for clearing the stagnant water in the Tirunelveli and Palayam Channels providing excellent breeding ground for mosquitoes and sustained drive against stray dog menace.
