A 42-year-old woman was killed and her 16-year-old daughter injured after the scooter they were riding skidded on the Marathahalli–Siddapura road, reportedly waterlogged, following which she was run over by a school bus on Saturday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Kantha, a warehouse executive residing in the city. Her husband runs a business in the HAL area.
According to police, the accident occurred around 7.45 am when Kantha was riding her scooter from Marathahalli towards Siddapura to drop her daughter at school. Following heavy overnight rain, the stretch of road was waterlogged, sources said. The rider lost control of the scooter and both mother and daughter fell onto the road. Before Kantha could get up, a school bus ran over her, killing her on the spot.
Her daughter, who witnessed the incident, was left traumatised and in deep shock. She was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment and counselling.
While it was alleged that Kantha fell while trying to navigate a pothole-ridden road, officials of the Bengaluru East City Corporation dismissed the allegation, saying the road was in good condition and free of potholes.
Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar, Additional Commissioner of the Bengaluru East City Corporation, said: “We usually repair potholes as soon as they emerge. The accident spot was completely pothole-free, and we will coordinate with the police in this matter.”
Officers are examining CCTV footage from the area and recording statements from eyewitnesses to ascertain the exact sequence of events and determine whether any negligence on the part of civic authorities contributed to the accident.
