Supreme Court modifies earlier order concerning 3 NCERT book experts

The Supreme Court on Friday (May 22, 2026) recalled its “harsh” observations made on its March 11 order that had directed the Centre, States and others to disassociate from three academics, following a row over an NCERT book chapter containing "offending" contents on corruption in the judiciary. The apex court left it open to the Centre, States, Union Territories, public universities and institutions that receive funds from the Central or State governments to take an independent decision on the issue, without being influenced by its observations made in the March 11 order.

High Court grants three-day bail to Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid

The Delhi High Court on Friday (May 22, 2026) granted three days’ interim bail to Umar Khalid, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots. Mr. Khalid had sought interim bail to attend a post-death ritual (Chehlum) of his uncle and take care of his mother, who has to undergo a surgery.

The order was passed by a Bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Madhu Jain, after Khalid appealed against the trial court’s May 19 order that rejected his bail, saying that attending the ceremony of his deceased uncle was “not that necessary” and that other family members were available to take care of his mother.

Muslim side moves Supreme Court, challenges High Court order in Bhojshala complex case

The Muslim side on Thursday (May 21, 2026) moved the Supreme Court challenging a Madhya Pradesh High Court order, which said the disputed Bhojshala complex in Dhar district of the State was a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.

The Hindu community considers Bhojshala a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, while the Muslim side calls the 11th-century monument the Kamal Maula Mosque. The disputed complex in Dhar district is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Twisha Sharma death: Madhya Pradesh government proposes to transfer case to CBI

“The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday (May 22, 2026) proposed to transfer the case involving Twisha Sharma, the Noida woman who was allegedly harassed for dowry and died last week, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),” officials said. “The notification has been issued by Home Department Secretary Krishnaveni Desavatu,” an official said.

“It is proposed to transfer the investigation of the case registered at Katara Hills Police Station under Sections 80(2), 85, 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 3/4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, regarding the dowry death incident that occurred on May 12, 2026, to the CBI,” the notification said.

VCK, IUML join Vijay’s Cabinet in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Friday (May 22, 2026) concluded his Cabinet formation with the induction of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) MLA Vanni Arasu (Tindivanam) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MLA A.M. Shahjahan (Papanasam).

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Ministers at Lok Bhavan in Chennai, in the presence of Mr. Vijay and his Cabinet colleagues.

Govt. to ensure no ‘unnatural demographic changes’ in the country, each infiltrator to be expelled: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday (May 22, 2026) said the Government of India has decided to not only stop infiltration but expel each infiltrator ensuring that there are no unnatural demographic changes in the country.

Mr. Shah said that a Smart Border concept will be unveiled soon, which will make the entire Pakistan and Bangladesh border “impregnable”. The project, equipped with drones, radars, cameras, and other technical resources, will plug the gaps in border security.

Government moves Pregabalin to Schedule H1 following reports of drug abuse

Pregabalin has been included under Schedule H1 of the Drugs Rules, 1945, vide a Gazette Notification, according to information released by the Union Health Ministry on Friday (May 22, 2026). The move comes following reports received from various States regarding the misuse and abuse of the drug, particularly among youth.

The drug, which is prescribed for the treatment of chronic pain, neuropathies, fibromyalgia, and certain neurological conditions, has reportedly been misused for its sedative, euphoric, and dissociative effects. Recent seizures of illegally stocked and sold Pregabalin have been reported from some parts of the country.

RBI board approves dividend payment of ₹2,86,588 crore to government 

The Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday (May 22, 2026) approved the transfer of surplus of ₹2,86,588.46 crore to the Central Government as dividend for the accounting year 2025-26.

This was after taking into consideration the current macroeconomic factors, financial performance of the Bank and maintenance of appropriate risk buffers, the RBI said.

Congress alleges attempted cover-up of NEET paper leak, demands accountability from PM and Education Minister

The Congress on Friday (May 22, 2026) accused the Narendra Modi-led Union government of attempting to “cover up” alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination, with party general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh saying both the Prime Minister and the Education Minister must be held accountable for the “colossal tragedy” and its “ongoing cover-up”.

‘Are cartoons in NCERT textbooks proper?’ Supreme Court asks retired judge panel to review 

The Supreme Court on Friday (May 22, 2026) asked a former apex court judge-led committee to review cartoons published in National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta pointed out that “textbook is not a place where you use cartoons”.
