Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Wednesday (May 6, 2026) expressed confidence that the Union Territory would attain Statehood soon.

Mr. Rangasamy, who is set to assume office for a fifth term following the NDA retaining power in Puducherry, arrived in Salem in Tamil Nadu around 1 p.m. and offered prayers at the Appa Paithiyam Swamy temple in Suramangalam in the city. He participated in a special pooja at the temple.

Speaking to reporters, he conveyed his wishes to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C. Vijay Joseph on his political prospects. “My congratulations. I wish him success in functioning effectively and implementing several schemes for the people,” he said.

On the demand for Statehood, Mr. Rangasamy said the government was continuously urging the Union government. “Statehood will be achieved soon. We are pressing for it consistently as part of the NDA,” he said.

When asked about the formation of the Puducherry Cabinet, he said details would be known once it assumes office. Responding to a query on Tamil Nadu Congress leaders extending support to the TVK, he said they had come forward as support was required.
