Congress to join TVK-led govt. in T.N.; number of Cabinet...

The Congress party has been offered a place in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Tamil Nadu, and the party has accepted the offer, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar said on Thursday.

“We have already received the offer from TVK. We have accepted the offer to be part of the government after nearly 60 years,” Mr. Chodankar told journalists in New Delhi.

Responding to a question on how many Congress MLAs would be inducted into the government, Mr. Chodankar said the number of Cabinet berths would be known after the final discussions conclude. He also said it was the prerogative of the Chief Minister to decide when to induct Congress MLAs into the Cabinet.

Earlier in the day, the newly elected Congress MLAs met party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Mr. Chodankar said Mr. Kharge had asked them to work hard and rebuild the party.

“We also called on Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and held a detailed discussion. He asked us to focus on complete organisational rebuilding. He asked all the MLAs to devote their time to party work, conduct tours and rebuild the party. As we join the government, we should use that opportunity for public good,” Mr. Chodankar said.

He said the focus of the Congress party was to strengthen its organisational structure and fight the upcoming local body elections with full strength.

The Congress contested the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance. Of the 28 seats it contested, the party won five. S. Rajesh Kumar from Killiyoor, Tharahai Cuthbert from Colachel, Jamal Mohamed Younoos from Mayiladuthurai, P. Viswanathan from Melur, and T.T. Praveen from Vilavancode were elected.

The party snapped ties with the DMK after the election results were declared and extended support to the TVK, which emerged as the single largest party.
