A 23-year-old man identified as R. Ganesan of Varushanadu in Theni district allegedly escaped while he was in police custody.

Police said on Saturday that two days ago, the accused, who had been serving as a remand prisoner in the jail, was taken to the court for extension of judicial custody. While they were returning to the sub-jail in the evening, the accused had reported of some uneasiness.

Immediately, after obtaining necessary permission from the sub-jail authorities, the two policemen took him to the Theni Government Medical College and Hospital. After a thorough medical examination, the accused was brought back to the sub-jail.

Even as they were waiting in front of the sub-jail for the authorities to open the doors, the accused made good his escape under the cover of darkness. After a hunt was on to nab failed, the police lodged a complaint.

A team was formed to secure the accused, police said and added that the Kandamanoor police registered a case.
