A 52-year-old sub-inspector of the Anaicut Police was severely injured after a bus hit the two-wheeler he was riding on at Shenbakkam in Vellore on Tuesday.

The injured officer was identified as S. Karuna, a native of Anaicut village in the district. He was serving as sub-inspector at the police station for the past few years.

Initial inquiry revealed that Karuna was riding his two-wheeler on the bridge along the Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) to go to the new bus terminus as part of routine patrol. At that time, a bus that was coming behind him hit the two-wheeler as Karuna was trying to take a left turn to use the service lane.

The police said that in the impact, the sub-inspector was thrown from the two-wheeler, which got mangled. The bus came to a stop after hitting a lorry on the stretch. Based on alert, the Vellore North Police rushed to the spot and admitted the injured policeman at Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. A case was registered and a probe is underway.
