The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) will soon deploy a high-frequency (HF) radar along Puducherry’s coastline to measure surface currents and waves upto 200 km offshore. The proposed radars will support real-time ocean monitoring, data validation and early warning of severe weather events including cyclones.
NIOT has identified two suitable locations — Kilinjalmedu and Akkempettai in Karaikal — for installation of the high-frequency radar system. As many as 10 sites were identified and NIOT gave its preference for two sites.
