The Secretariat Colony police on Wednesday arrested a woman for allegedly cheating a man of ₹4.5 lakh by offering a house for lease. Search is under way for the prime accused Shankar.
According to the police, Shankar, posing as the owner of a house on Subbarayan Main Street in Nammalwarpet, offered to lease it out for ₹4.5 lakh to Kumararaja, 54, of Otteri.
Kumararaja entered into a lease agreement on February 13 and handed over ₹4.5 lakh to Shanker, in the presence of his daughter, Nandini. However, Shankar allegedly delayed handing over the house to him, citing repair works.
Later, when Kumararaja discovered that Shankar was not the actual owner of the house, he demanded his money back. However, Shankar allegedly threatened and abused him.
Based on Kumararaja’s complaint, the Crime Wing of the Secretariat Colony Police registered a case under cheating charges against Shankar and Nandini and launched an investigation.
The police arrested Nandini, 25, of Subbarayan Main Street in Nammalwarpet, who is employed at an IT company.
