Officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department on Monday inspected the elephant rejuvenation camp site at Thekkampatti near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district.
The annual camp, organised by the HR&CE Department, was introduced during the AIADMK regime. More than 40 temple elephants from across Tamil Nadu usually participate in the 48-day camp, during which they undergo health check-ups and are provided with nutritious food under the supervision of veterinarians and mahouts.
The camp was discontinued after 2021. Following the formation of the TVK government, discussions are under way to revive the programme.
A team led by HR&CE Joint Commissioner Ramesh Kumar inspected facilities for housing elephants and mahouts, fodder storage areas, locations for bathing facilities along the Bhavani river, and routes for walking exercises. The officials also discussed the installation of solar-powered fencing and watchtowers around the camp premises.
Mr. Ramesh Kumar said a report on the inspection would be submitted to the State government for further action.
