The commitment to communal harmony can be better displayed by not resorting to sacrifice of cattle or any other animal as ‘Qurbani’ on the day of Eid on May 28, said Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s South Karnataka saha karyadarshi Sharan Pumpwell in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Pumpwell said calling Hindus for Iftar and offering them ‘samosa’ and fruits during Ramadan has been projected as a sign of communal harmony. Mr. Pumpwell said that Muslim religious leaders should ensure no animal sacrifice during Eid this year.

He lauded the Mangaluru City and the Dakshina Kannada district police for curbing consumption and sale of drugs, illegal extraction and transportation of sand and theft and slaughter of cattle. The police action has helped to restore peace in the region, he said.

At the same time, Mr. Pumpwell said theft and slaughter of cattle have continued in Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the State. Illegal abattoirs are operating in Katipalla, Kasba Bengre and Mukkacherry in Mangaluru, he claimed.

“We want the government to act in letter and spirit of Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act in preventing cattle theft, cattle transportation and slaughter,” he said.

Kateel Dinesh Pai, a VHP goraksha pramukh and member of Dakshina Kannada District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), said SPCAs in districts have failed to effectively curb inhuman cattle transportation and slaughter of cattle across the State.
