Days after the Supreme Court directed the conservation and renovation of Mysuru’s iconic Devaraja Market and Lansdowne Building, MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Monday visited the century-old Devaraja Market and interacted with traders.

The visit comes in the wake of the apex court’s May 4, 2026 verdict ordering restoration of the two heritage structures. Traders and tenants had opposed demolition and reconstruction, demanding restoration of the market building, citing its heritage value and architectural significance. The Lansdowne Building has remained out of bounds for traders for several years after a portion of the structure collapsed.

Describing the judgment earlier as a landmark decision, Mr. Yaduveer had said the Supreme Court ordered conservation and renovation of the 19th-century buildings.

He said the verdict was based on a detailed technical assessment carried out by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, which reportedly found that nearly 70% of the structures could be repaired and restored while retaining the existing foundation.

In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Mr. Yaduveer urged the State government to immediately release the sanctioned funds in line with recommendations made by expert committees from the IIT, Roorkee and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). He also sought directions to the Mysuru City Corporation and Mysuru Development Authority to begin restoration works at the earliest.
