1. Clarity eludes Cabinet formation even as Congress leaders meet Rahul Gandhi in Delhi
Karnataka Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, at Mr. Kharge’s official residence in Delhi on June 2, 2026, for the much-awaited decision on new Cabinet formation in Karnataka. Despite the discussion being pushed by a day and the entire Congress leadership from Karnataka camping in Delhi to lobby for Cabinet berths, little clarity has emerged on the issue thus far.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru city was awash with banners and flexes ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of Mr. Shivakumar as new chief minister of Karnataka, scheduled for 4.05 p.m. at the Glass House in Lok Bhavan on June 2, 2026. In view of the event, elaborate security and traffic management arrangements have been put in place, with the Bengaluru City Police working in close coordination with the Traffic Police to ensure smooth conduct of the event and maintain law and order.
2. Karnataka legislature signs MoU to develop National e-Vidhan app, digitise operations
The two Houses of the Karnataka State Legislature have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Informatics Centre (NIC) for developing National e-Vidhan app to digitise operations of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
Assembly Speaker U. T. Khader said the cost of developing e-Vidhan application to cover Legislative Assembly proceedings in Bengaluru and Belagavi is estimated at ₹78 crore, while the application for Legislative Council is estimated at ₹52 crore.
About 60% of the project cost is set to be covered by the Union Government while the remaining 40% will be borne by the State government. A committee of officials from the two Houses have been formed to oversee development of the application.
3. Congress high command has not asked to join new Cabinet so far: Speaker U.T. Khader
Speaker U.T. Khader has said that the Congress high command has so far not asked him to join the new Cabinet to be headed by D.K. Shivakumar. Mr. Khader said if the party wants him to continue as Speaker he will do so. “If I am asked to work as minister in the new Cabinet or continue as an MLA, I am happy to do so. I will act as per the directions of Congress high command,” he said.
However, people close to Mr. Khader said he is set to tender his resignation to the post of Speaker and join the new cabinet on June 3. Mr. Khader is set leave for Bengaluru from Mangaluru on June 2 evening. Since June 1, party workers and Mr. Khader’s admirers have been meeting and congratulating him after hearing that he is among the ministers to be sworn-in on June 3.
4. Kannada organisations in Belagavi seek quick resolution of border dispute
Kannada organisations have urged the new government in Karnataka to resolve the border issue with Maharashtra as soon as possible. They also plan to submit a list of demands to the government.
Their demands include strengthening institutions like the Hampi Kannada University and all universities in border districts as well as the strict implementation of the Kannada usage policy at government departments in all districts. They have also demanded special incentives for students from border villages who want to pursue higher studies.
