Bengaluru’s population is growing at an annual rate of 3.7%, while the number of vehicles in the city is increasing at nearly 10% every year, highlighting the mounting pressure on the city’s traffic management system, senior police officials informed Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Friday.

Mr. Kharge reviewed Bengaluru’s traffic management system during a visit to the Bengaluru Traffic Management Centre, where he held discussions with senior police officers and assessed measures being taken to regulate vehicular movement across the city.

The Minister said that the State government would formulate an action plan to strengthen road safety, ensure stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and improve the operational efficiency of traffic police personnel.

During the review, the officials briefed Mr. Kharge on the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation, employment growth and expanding economic activity. “Despite the increasing mobility demands, Bengaluru has developed an effective traffic management system to handle the growing traffic volume,” the officials said.

According to the police, the Bengaluru Traffic Police manage traffic through four divisions and 53 traffic police stations spread across a road network of nearly 14,000 km. The force oversees traffic movement for around 1.25 crore registered vehicles in the city.

Mr. Kharge said that the Bengaluru Traffic Police have been effectively utilising modern technology for traffic management and noted that efforts would be made to further enhance efficiency in the coming days.

The Minister also visited the Traffic Police Museum and inspected the Camera Tracking Division, where he reviewed technology-driven monitoring and enforcement systems.
