Unity in diversity

The idea of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) resurfaces prominently during elections. While its objective of ensuring equality and justice is commendable, India’s vast diversity cannot be ignored. The country is home to multiple religions. Given this complexity, any move towards UCC must be cautious and inclusive. The Central government should constitute a broad-based committee comprising not just politicians, but also intellectuals, social workers, and representatives from religious and tribal communities.

Such a body must deliberate thoroughly on sensitive issues and propose balanced solutions.
