Assam BJP’s legislature party meeting got underway here on Sunday (May 10, 2026) morning to elect its leader, who will also head the new government in the Northeastern state.
Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini are present at the meeting as central observers and co-observers.
Outgoing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State party president Dilip Saikia, and all newly elected MLAs of the BJP were also in attendance.
After the election of the BJP legislature party leader, it will have to be ratified by its allies, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

Leaders of the NDA are scheduled to meet the Assam Governor to stake claim to form the government later on Sunday (May 10, 2026).
The BJP-led NDA had swept to a third successive term in the state with a two-thirds majority in the assembly polls. The BJP secured 82 seats, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) won 10 each, in the 126-member House.
