The city police on Saturday (May 23, 2026) arrested a Village Administrative Officer (VAO) on charges of attempting to sexually harass a 17-year-old girl at Kumaragiri Pettai here on Friday night (May 22, 2026).
According to the police, the girl was attempting to cross the bypass road in the area when Balakrishnan, a VAO from Periya Krishnapuram, allegedly approached her while under the influence of alcohol. Police said he questioned the girl about crossing the road in a dangerous manner and allegedly attempted to harass her.
The girl raised an alarm, following which local residents rushed to the spot, rescued her and allegedly assaulted the accused. Balakrishnan sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The All Women Police Station in Ammapettai registered a case and arrested Balakrishnan. Further investigation is under way.
