The Podanur Train Users’ Association has urged the Railways to restore Chetttipalayam Railway Station along the Coimbatore-Pollachi sector, factoring in its historic significance.
Originally constructed during the British period, Chettipalayam Railway Station that served as an important suburban station catering to the needs of local residents, farmers, and students was demolished for broad-gauge (BG) conversion works. The non-functional state of the station (Code CIM) has caused hardship to the travelling public, N. Subramanian, general secretary of the association, said in a representation to the Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Railway Division.
Chettipalayam and surroundings have been witnessing steady growth in population and economic activity, and accessible and affordable railway transport is a felt need, Mr. Subramanian said.
The Southern Railway had assured to rebuild the station at the time of demolition for BG conversion, he added.
