College student held for abetment of girl’s suicide in Erode
2026-05-19 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

The Anthiyur police on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) arrested a 19-year-old college student from Ulundurpet in Villupuram district on charges of abetment of suicide of a Plus One student in Anthiyur last month.

The accused was identified as M. Satheesh, a B.Sc. Computer Science student of a private college in Ulundurpet, who was allegedly responsible for the death of M. Dharani, 16-year-old girl from Thavittupalayam in Anthiyur taluk on April 22, 2026. Police said the two became acquainted through social media.

The girl’s parents on Monday (May 18, 2026) submitted a petition to the district administration alleging inaction on the part of the police in arresting the accused for 26 days. They claimed that he had allegedly harassed the girl and threatened her father over the phone. The girl had reportedly told her parents that the youth, with whom she had allegedly been in a relationship for the past four months, had threatened to misuse photographs taken earlier. The girl later ended her life, and her father alleged that the delay in police action had caused distress to the family.

Following the petition submitted by the girl’s parents, the district police formed a special team and nabbed the accused at Keel Thaniyalampattu village under the limits of the Thiruvennainallur police station in Villupuram district.

In a press release, the district police claimed that the accused had switched off his mobile phone and had been in hiding for five weeks, making it difficult to trace him. However, based on continuous efforts and specific information, the accused was secured on Monday night and brought to the Anthiyur police station.

In a handwritten note reportedly left by the girl, she stated that Satheesh had forced her to accept his proposal, following which she agreed to the relationship. She further stated that when she expressed reluctance to continue the relationship, he insisted on meeting her and she met him in Bhavani. According to the note, when she refused to take photographs with him, he assaulted her. The girl also alleged that when she sought to end the relationship, he abused her in foul language and threatened to misuse the photographs, which forced her to take the extreme step.

(Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline (104) and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline (044-2464 0050).
