The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the government to ensure that police personnel with criminal backgrounds are denied promotions in public interest.

SHRC judicial member K. Baijunath called for the introduction of modern and scientific training methods to enhance the credibility and efficiency of the police force.

He asked the Home Secretary to examine corruption within the force, unscientific promotion practices, and deficiencies in training, and to implement appropriate policy reforms.

The directive came in response to a complaint that inadequate training was leading police and prison personnel to engage in suspicious and improper activities.

In his complaint, Suresh K. Guptan alleged that promotions to the rank of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) were contributing to growing corruption and criminal tendencies within the force.

A report submitted by the Malappuram Deputy Superintendent of Police said that police personnel in the subdivision had been instructed to maintain greater professionalism and decorum in their interactions with the public, said Mr. Baijunath.
