A remand prisoner escaped from police custody here at Karaikudi on Monday.
Police said, continuous thefts of car batteries were reported in the Sakkottai area near Karaikudi in Sivaganga district.
Sakkottai police, who were investigating these incidents, identified a 18-year-old boy from Othakadai, Madurai.
Following this, police arrested the suspect and seized 11 vehicle batteries from his possession.
Subsequently, on Sunday, the police were transporting him in a vehicle from Madurai to Sakkottai.
When the vehicle reached the railway gate near Kudikathanpatti Road near Karaikudi, the suspect claimed he needed to relieve himself.
Believing him, the police allowed him to get down, at which point he pushed the officers aside and fled.
Based on a complaint filed by Constable Sivabalan, the Karaikudi South Police have registered a case and are actively searching for the escaped prisoner.
