A 16-year-old goatherd was rescued by Revenue officials at Thirumalaisamudhram in the district on Tuesday.

According to sources, information about the minor boy engaged in goat rearing reached the Revenue Divisional Office, Thanjavur, on June 16. Subsequently, a team of officials visited Thirumalaisamudhram and rescued him.

The informers had told the officials that the boy was employed by the herd owner, Rajkumar, as the teenager’s mother, Joys Mary of Palliagraharam, was unable to repay a loan of ₹1 lakh.

As the boy confirmed the information, he was relieved from his work and lodged at the Juvenile Home in Thanjavur. While a compensation of ₹30,000 was extended to the boy’s family, a case was registered against Rajkumar at Vallam police, the sources added.
