A 17-year-old boy died after a cradle rope reportedly tightened around his neck while he was playing at his house in Villarasampatti here on Tuesday (June 16, 2026).

The deceased was identified as Manikandan, son of Kannan and Pandiyammal. He had recently completed his Class XII examinations and was awaiting admission to college.

According to the police, a cradle had been tied at the house for an infant living in the neighbourhood. On Tuesday night, Manikandan was sitting on the cradle and was reportedly playing with the rope when it accidentally tightened around his neck.

On receiving information, personnel from the Erode North police station rushed to the spot and recovered the body. It was sent to the Government Headquarters Hospital, Erode, for post-mortem examination. The police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the death. The incident has left the family and residents of the locality in shock.
